What is insomnia you may ask? Insomnia is simply a health condition that you have difficulty to fall asleep or to sleep through the night, especially it persists for a period of time. One tenth of Americans have some sort of sleep problems and a lot of them have become habitual and they feel lethargic and tried during the day. If you don't get enough sleep, your life will become very miserable and your body can't function as normal. When your insomnia problem doesn't go away for weeks, you and your family will suffer.

Even after having regular sleeps over the years, you can develop insomnia out of blue at any time and at any age. A study shows that one in three people are suffering from insomnia. Not only is this the inability to fall asleep, but it also involves not being able to stay asleep or continually waking up earlier than planned.

Don't worry, there are many ways to help you sleep through your sleepless nights and cure your insomnia.

Your doctor is very likely to prescribe you sleeping pills to help your insomnia issue. Sleeping pills like Ambien or Lunesta is meant for short term use, and it only works well when you have serious problem like death of a close relative, losing a job or losing your spouse. Sleeping pills are meant for short term fix of your sleep problem but not design for long term usage. Prescribed sleeping pills just can't cure your insomnia at all.

If you want to get some peaceful sleep at night, you should by all means avoid taking caffeine, tea, coffee, coke, chocolate and sugar like cheesecake etc. Don't forget to check if you are taking any diet or sinus pills that are very likely keep you awake at night.

It is also not advisable to use alcohol as sleep aid. It is another misconception that a drink or more will relax you enough to sleep but it only helps provide broken sleep. Again this is temporary and should not be used at all by those suffering from insomnia.

Furthermore, don't overeat and give yourself ample of time to digest your dinner before you go to bed. Try not to drink water or other liquid at least thirty minutes before your sleeping time.

Do not take long nap during the day if you have problem sleeping at night. Long nap will mess up your sleep clock such that your body will become confuse of your bed time and hence, promote insomnia.

Avoid watching TV or computer while on the bed and trying to sleep if you are suffering from insomnia. TV will only delay your sleep.

Exercise to improve your sleeping habits but don't do it too much and also avoid exercising just before your sleeping time.
