The Heart and Colostrum

By Dr. Anthony Kleinsmith

Thousands of articles have been written on the health benefits of colostrum. Colostrum has been known to effectively help build the immune system and treat many ailments and diseases. Now, scientists are learning that colostrum can have huge health benefits for the heart. The following reflects the current state of scientific knowledge about what routine dietary supplementation with high quality bovine colostrum will do with respect to heart muscle physiology and function.

Growth Hormone IGF-1

IGF-1 works together with growth hormone that is found in bovine colostrum; these hormones work on the function of the heart muscle as well as repairing the heart muscle. All heart muscle cells have receptors for IGF-1 and growth hormone. IGF-1 has been shown to work indirectly on the heart and operate by using separate hormonal pathways. Growth hormone has been shown to work directly on the heart.

Research shows stimulatory effects come from both growth hormone and IGF-1on heart muscle cells. These stimulatory effects occur by a pathway of cells that use calcium. When congestive heart failure patients have been administered growth hormone, their clinical status and heart function improved.

Quality Colostrum has no Cholesterol

Many are confused thinking that colostrum and milk are related. The fact is that colostrum and milk are two totally different substances. Colostrum comes first from the mother then milk comes second. There is a period of time when both milk and colostrum are mixed together. However, high quality colostrum has virtually no milk present. Individuals with high serum cholesterol or high triglycerides can safely use bovine colostrum because it does not have any cholesterol. For this reason, patients looking to benefit their heart but have medical issues with cholesterol should seek out the highest quality colostrum on the market.
