What Does Hypnosis Really Do?

By Susan Watson, CHt.

Hypnosis helps many problems but the three main ones are:

Smoking cessation, weight loss, stress management.

Each of these is testimony to the grave difficulty of changing behavior that is detrimental to our health and well-being.

Smoking is a physical addiction brought on, at first, by peer pressure and marketing experts.

Weight loss is necessary because eating is necessary " its not something people can quit. But it is something that people can modify for their own good.

Before you can effectively deal with the first two, though, you have got to master number three because that is the root of the other behaviors.

We all know that stress is both good and bad depending on how a person deals with it. It is part of life. The behaviors " smoking, drug use, financial, alcohol abuse " are negative responses to stress. I wont go into any mind numbing theory about why. Lets just say they are a complex jumble of conscious thoughts and subconscious mechanisms that lay beneath them. Those thoughts can be controlled by you and the behavior can be stopped or changed.

Stress management is really "response management". Hypnosis explores the subconscious mechanisms under the surface thoughts. After learning them you can realign your thinking and learn more appropriate responses.

To create the world they want to experience, hypnosis draws from the person's resources and strength's. New talents and abilities can emerge. And harmful responses can disappear.

These are frequently asked questions about hypnosis.

Will someone else control my mind?

No. Only you can do that. As a matter of fact, the point of hypnosis is to allow you to be more in control.

Is my free will affected?

When you're hypnotized you don't lose your personality, your free will or your personal strength. Hypnosis is a relaxed state in which suggestions are presented for the outcome for which you desire. You are always free to accept or to not accept those suggestions.

Can anyone be hypnotized?

Typically, the only people that cannot be hypnotized are those that don't want to be. Anyone else can easily enter into a state of deep hypnosis with a skilled hypnotist/hypnotherapist.

What is the danger?

Hypnosis is generally no more distressing than daydreaming. If you read the medical literature or ask for case studies, you'll see that hypnosis is no more dangerous than taking an aspirin.

Do I sleep during hypnosis?

Yes you will be fully awake and aware - just very relaxed. And you can emerge from hypnosis at any time.

Better focus, a sense of calm and positive feelings can help you change harmful behaviors through hypnosis.
